PNEUMONIA DUBAI | SYMPTOMS, TRANSMISSION & VACCINATION

Pneumonia Dubai | 7 May 2022

Pneumonia is a respiratory infection caused by streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria which can range from mild to severe. There are more than 90 strains of streptococcus bacteria, some of which cause more serious infection than others.

Symptoms
Common symptoms include high grade fever of 38 C, headache, aches and pain. However, pneumococcal infection can also be an invasive or non-invasive type.

Non-invasive pneumonia can affect the bronchi in the lungs, ears and sinus. Invasive pneumonia can affect major organ, blood and can cause systemic infection.

Transmission
Can be spread through airborne droplet such as from a cough or sneeze of an infected individual.

Vaccination
Pneumococcal vaccination (PPV23) contains 23 types of pneumococcal polysaccharide. It does not include all the strains but the ones included in the vaccine are the ones that almost all (about nine out of ten) infections are caused by pneumococci.

It is very effective at preventing pneumococcal infections.

The vaccine is inactivated or “killed” vaccines and do not contain any live organisms. They cannot cause the disease against which they protect.
