UNDERSTANDING IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA

Iron deficiency anaemia is caused by lack of iron, often because of blood loss or pregnancy. It’s treated with iron tablets and by eating iron-rich foods. Symptoms can include:

– tiredness and lack of energy

– shortness of breath

– noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)

– pale skin

TREATMENT FOR IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA

Dr. Barbara Karin Vela will advise treatment after determining the cause of your anaemia (which may be an ulcer or very heavy periods, for example). Iron pills will be suggested to replenish the iron that is lacking from your body if the blood test reveals that your red blood cell count is low. They must be taken for approximately six months. After taking an iron pill, sipping on orange juice may aid in iron absorption. As for how to take iron supplements, heed the counsel of Dr. Barbara Karin Vela.

Some people get side effects when taking iron tablets like:

– tummy pain

– feeling sick

– constipation or diarrhoea

– heartburn

– black poo

Untreated iron deficiency anaemia can make you more at risk of illness and infection – a lack of iron affects the immune system, may increase your risk of developing complications that affect the heart or lungs – such as an abnormally fast heartbeat (tachycardia) or heart failure.

In pregnancy, can cause a greater risk of complications before and after birth.
